Success at the Eurasia Cup

Cadets Tom Bradley, Olivia Pickthall and adult Blake Collins along with BKK Invictus Alan Shnawa represented England in the Eurasia Cup in Antalya, Turkey.

The event set in the Kremlin Palace Hotel had 11 countries and a very large Turkish contingent with over 175 participants.

Tom took Gold in the cadet kata and 2nd in the -65kg contact event. After a gruelling 3 round semi final he was very tired and was put under pressure in the final with his opponent gaining a waza ari. Tom came back really well and was taking the fight to his opponent but was unable to recover the point.

Olivia had the misfortune of having her bag lost by the airline so had to borrow a gi and all protection but still fought really well and won her semi final by 3 round decision and lost the final also by 3 round decision to also gain 2nd place. For both the cadets it was invaluable experience.

Middleweight Blake, took 2nd in the adult kata losing on count back after a tie for 1st place. Stepping into his first adult international equate himself very well and had a gruelling quarter final picking up an injury around the knee. This was too affect him in the semi where his opponent kicked him across the knee and although an illegal technique the GB coach Felix Ntumazah rightly advised the judging panel Blake could not continue but it wasn’t due to the knee kick but previous damage.

Alan Shnawa also took 3rd place losing out on a 3 round decision in the lightweight category.

Ozga takes Scottish Middleweight Crown for 2016

Dawid 1st, Blake 3rd, Olivia won

Dawid 1st, Blake 3rd, Olivia won

The club had three participants in the Scottish Open at the Arc Gym, Glasgow on Saturday and they all produced top displays.

First up was cadet fighter Oliva Pickthall, who had one match against Aiofe O’Grady-Cocoran of Ireland. Olivia controlled the match catching Aiofe early with a head kick and then worked her opponent round the mat with strong punch and low kick combinations for 5-0 victory.

Both Dawid Ozga and Blake Collins were in the open mens middleweight.  Blake was in the top half of the draw in his first open adult event. He won his first bout with an ippon with two jodan mawashi’s to the head stunning his opponent. Then he lost a decision to the more experienced Luke Baldwin (Wales) in a very good fight.  In the 3rd place fight off he controlled the bout dropping his opponent for ippon with a strong body punch.

Dawid who normally campaigns at LW, earned a quick decision against his dutch opponent and then winded both his next two fighters with body punches for waza ari.

In the final against Luke he started very sharply and after about a minute scored waza ari for a punch to the body and took the decision at the end of the round.
